As Commonwealth leaders met at the weekend to decide how to deal with Zimbabwe they reached (surprise) a compromise. African leaders stood behind Mr. Mugabe in order to defend THEIR 'dignity' and the double standards dealt to Africa over the past by the West. I didn't matter or occur to them that they embraced a tyrant, all they saw was us against them. That's all very well and oh so diplomatic. As they grimace with satisfaction, I wonder if that can be explained to the 3 mutilated young men shown on international television lying in hospital beds with the initials of the MDC carved in 9 inch letters on their backs by ZANU PF militias, simply because they want to exercise their right to vote. As these 'leaders' draw battle lines within the organisation, a battle for humanity is devouring a nation and its children. When it comes to past, that we follow the route of Rwanda, Liberia and Sierra Leone I can just see them crying foul at how the West does nothing about our plight......hypocrites! For all their talk most of the leaders on our continent don't give a damn about their populaces or principles of civilisation and continue to scratch each others back because you never know when you need the favour return. Look at President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria who instigated the now laughable Abuja Agreement on 6th September 2001. We all knew that Mugabe and his lot did not have the slightest inclination in abiding by this declaration from the onset, they just needed to buy time. From the onset he not only reneged on the deal but upped the ante with increased violations through blood and unconstitutionally changing the law. As this document lies in the dust of contempt, what have Obasanjo and other African leaders done about it. Absolutely sod all, but this is true to form as our plight is yet again condemned to the scrap heap of history. Portals 32 & 33 are for them.
